Wig Care: How Wigs Respond to Various Environments
For those who utilize wigs or hair pieces for regular or periodic use, caring for these items is extremely important for long-term value, comfort and more. One key element of wig care involves knowing how various settings or environments you might be in regularly will impact a wig, plus how to steer clear of any risks that might be present in certain situations.
At Judi's Wigs, we're here to assist clients with a wide range of wig purchase and wig care services, including wig upkeep for any kinds of common environmental settings you're in. What are some common environments that those who wear wigs may find themselves in, and how do wigs typically react to these? We'll go over those in part one of our series today, while part two will focus on some more general care themes.
High Temperatures
Oklahoma City is a place that gets very hot throughout the year, and those who wear wigs can find that their wig or hair piece may start to take on a frizzy, dry look in higher temperatures. Others may find that their wig feels heavier, or that it creates too much heat on their head.
In some situations, a quality solution here involves proper wig selection. Synthetic wigs, for instance, tend to be a bit lighter and less heat-retaining than human hair wigs, so consider this when shopping.
In other instances, proper cleaning and conditioning can help, as well as taking breaks from wearing the wig in certain scenarios when you may be out in high temperatures for extended periods of time. If you find the heat or humidity to be too much in your area, consider wearing a light head wrap or hat over your wig for part of the day.
And for those who use various styling tools for their wigs, consider setting your tools to low or medium heat settings instead of high, as this will prevent damage over time and help the wig retain its shape for longer.
Humid Environments
In humid environments, those who wear wigs can find that their wigs may take on too much moisture. This can create a heavy feel, and may also lead to a frizzy, disheveled look.
In these situations, many of the same solutions apply here as with high temperatures. Choosing synthetic wigs can be helpful for humidity-prone areas, and make sure to use proper cleaning and conditioning on your wig items as well. Also, consider wearing head wraps or hats that will help protect the wig from humidity, while keeping it in place and helping to avoid frizz.
Another great approach here is the use of anti-humidity spray, which can be applied to the wig itself and help it better withstand humid environments. This can help your wig look and feel better for longer periods of time, even in more demanding climates or seasonal changes.
Windy Environments
Another common environment that those who wear wigs may find themselves in is a windy one. Whether it's Oklahoma City's famed winds, or just breezes outdoors in general, this can create a number of issues for your wig. Wind can cause tangles and knots to develop in the hair strands, plus it can also lead to unevenness in the wig's shape. It may even lead to the wig being pulled off of your head in some cases!
As with some of our earlier concepts, purchasing the proper wig and wig accessories can be extremely helpful. Make sure to choose a wig that has some weight to it and is not too light, as this can help it stay in place better during windy spells.
Also, consider using pins or clips if you need extra assistance with keeping the wig on your head. Hairnets or caps can also be helpful for those who have to go out in public with their wig during windy periods, as they will keep the wig in place better and won't be easily affected by winds. And lastly, consider using a good hairspray or styling product on your wig when you're expecting to be outside for extended periods of time – this can help it stay together better and remain in place.
Movement Friction
For some, movement may also be a factor when it comes to wig care. Activities such as running, jumping and more can cause friction against the wig, leading to tangles and knots in the hair strands plus an uneven shape overall for the wig. This friction may also lead to minor chafing or skin irritation in some situations.
In these scenarios, proper wig selection can once again be helpful. Look for wigs that are made of materials that will provide some “give” and better accommodate movement without being too heavy or bulky. Also, consider using products such as scalp protectors to help reduce any chafing or irritation in these cases. Additionally, try using hairspray with added texture to add hold to the wig and keep it in place during more active scenarios.
With the right knowledge and preparation, you can make sure that any wig or hair piece you use is properly cared for in any environment or situation. By taking the time to evaluate your needs and purchasing pieces that offer better protection from various elements, you can help ensure your wigs stay looking great for a long time!
