Beating Cancer and Wearing Wigs
Next month we recognize a campaign that brings awareness and support to people who are fighting for their lives. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Judi’s Wigs supports the efforts put forth by charities across the nation to provide the medical treatment and emotional support necessary for helping people recover from breast cancer.
Even though our team of talented cosmetologists can’t medically treat somebody with cancer, we can help with offering a service that is valuable. Our team at Judi’s Wigs in Tulsa, Oklahoma helps people in all places of life, even as they battle cancer. Quite frankly, there is no greater joy than finding a wig for our client that makes them feel like themself.
Causes of Hair Loss
Cancer steals so much. Oftentimes chemotherapy is part of treatment and one of the side effects is hair loss. According to the American Cancer Society, chemotherapy medications damage the delicate hair follicles. These medications are so intense and take a patient with a full head of hair to completely bald in just a few short weeks.
Radiation is another treatment that can affect hair loss and impact hair growth. Unlike chemotherapy where the medication is typically injected or ingested and is spread throughout the entire body, radiation therapy can be localized depending on where treatment is needed.
Wigs Can Help
In an article published by the Mayo Clinic, “hair loss is a symbol to the world that you have cancer.” Wigs offer an element of normalcy. With the many valleys in cancer diagnosis and treatment, people are desperate for life to feel normal once again.
A common complaint of having a bald head...it’s cold! Wigs help keep the head guarded and warm. Head wraps or scarves are often worn to keep the head warm too. Even if it’s not cold outside, having a bare head can be hard to get used to.
Wig Comfort
Aren’t wigs itchy? That is the assumption and understandably so. However, if you have the right wig and the right cap, wigs can be quite comfortable.
It’s essential that a person be custom fitted with the correct sized cap. Wig Professionals at Judi’s Wigs do a thorough job of fitting our clients with a cap to ensure that they find it comfortable to wear their hairpiece.
Affording a Wig
There are many expenses that are incurred during cancer treatment. From hospital stays, travels, to prescriptions - it is often burdensome and overwhelming. There is some good news though! Insurance companies often cover wig expenses as long as they have been deemed a medical necessity by a medical provider. However, it is always best to find out the coverage for each plan beforehand.
Judi’s Wigs has an incredible team of Wig Professionals that offer services that will benefit anyone battling cancer with hopes of looking “normal” during their fight. If you have any questions, please contact us and we will be happy to help you.
